3rd October 2008 - BLACK HISTORY MONTH
IN CONJUNCTION WITH STOCKPORT COUNCIL
The theme is ‘Participation and Engagement’.
After more than 10 years, Black History Month (BHM) continues to grow in size and profile, in recognition of our rich cultures in Stockport Borough.
BHM has been celebrated across the UK every October for over 30 years, each year growing from strength to strength. Black History Month originated in America in 1926 in response to people of Africa descent being classified as a race that had not made any contribution to human civilisation.
This view of Black people has led to historic injustices such as slavery and apartheid as well as continuing social inequalities throughout the world.
With this backdrop, ACCA (in conjunction with SMBC) see it as a time when we can highlight and celebrate the achievements of our Black community and uncover hidden history about our communities.
Please note: This event is by invitation only and for adults only.
